A devastating early-morning crash in Polk County has resulted in two fatalities and left another person seriously injured after a violent collision near U.S. Highway 27 and California Boulevard in the Davenport area, prompting a major response from emergency crews and a full investigation by authorities. Preliminary findings from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office indicate the wreck occurred around 3:50 a.m. and involved a Genesis G70 and a Ford Explorer. Investigators say the Genesis was traveling southbound on U.S. 27 when it entered an intersection against a red light and struck the rear of the Ford Explorer, which was stopped at the signal. Officials confirmed that the 21-year-old driver of the Genesis, a resident of Summerfield, Florida, suffered fatal injuries in the impact. He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt. His passenger, a 30-year-old woman from Davenport, was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later died despite medical intervention. The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 31-year-old Davenport man, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover. The crash led to extended traffic delays while deputies and traffic homicide investigators processed the scene, documenting evidence, inspecting vehicle damage, and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct how the collision unfolded. Authorities have not yet determined whether speed or impairment played a role, and no charges are expected at this time as the investigation continues. The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers of overnight driving on major Florida roadways, with community members expressing condolences for those affected by the tragic loss of life.
