The Providence community is mourning the tragic loss of Joseph R. Baez, 28, who died following a motorcycle crash on Interstate 95 South in Madison, Connecticut.

According to the Connecticut State Police, the crash occurred around 1:40 p.m. on May 19 between Exits 59 and 60 along I-95 South. Investigators said Baez was operating a 2024 BMW M1000 motorcycle when it collided with the rear of a Subaru Crosstrek traveling ahead of him.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and immediately began lifesaving efforts, including CPR. Due to the severity of his injuries, Baez was airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died despite continued medical treatment.

State police reported that the motorcycle had allegedly been traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically shortly before the collision occurred. Authorities also stated the motorcycle had passed a state trooper moments earlier, though officials confirmed no pursuit had been initiated.

The driver of the Subaru was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene while cooperating fully with investigators.

The fatal collision caused major traffic delays along Interstate 95 South as emergency crews and crash reconstruction investigators worked for several hours to process the scene, collect evidence, and clear the roadway.
