A fatal shooting on Hyacinth Drive is under investigation after a Birmingham man died following what police describe as a dispute connected to a possible vehicle break-in attempt.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, officers responded to the 1000 block of Hyacinth Drive just before 9 p.m. on May 19 after receiving reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Martez Rashad Dunner suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Dunner was transported to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate a man inside a nearby residence heard a disturbance outside his home and went out to investigate. According to police, the homeowner encountered Dunner allegedly attempting to enter his vehicle. Authorities say a physical altercation followed, during which a single shot was fired, striking Dunner.

The individual involved in the shooting remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. He was later transported to police headquarters for questioning and placed on a 48-hour felony extension while detectives continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Dunner had previously been reported missing before the shooting occurred, according to both investigators and family members.

As detectives continue examining evidence and interviewing witnesses, authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed. Police are expected to present findings to prosecutors once the investigation is complete.

The incident has drawn attention throughout Birmingham as residents react to another deadly shooting in the city. Officials stated the death marks Birmingham’s 17th homicide of 2026.

Community members and family members mourning Martez Rashad Dunner have continued seeking answers while remembering his life beyond the tragic circumstances surrounding his death.
