Authorities in Greenwood County, South Carolina say a man has been charged in connection with a fatal domestic shooting that left a local resident dead on Sunday evening.

According to the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Maness Drive in Hodges following reports of a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they found Jerald Mitchell “Mitch” Steele suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:40 p.m., according to the county coroner.

Investigators later charged Kurtis Brooks Lawrence with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities confirmed that Lawrence is being held at the Greenwood County Detention Center.

Officials said Lawrence was known to the victim, describing the incident as stemming from a domestic dispute involving Steele and his daughter’s boyfriend.

The case remains under investigation by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office.
